THE MITO TwinAir was announced right after Fiat, which owns Alfa Romeo, spilled the beans that more versions of the TwinAir are on the way, with a range of capacities and outputs.

At least one won’t even have a turbocharger, in the manner of the original twin-cylinder Fiat 500 of ‘back in the day’, but for now the 84bhp turbocharged 875cc is the only choice among the Fiat Group’s small cars.
Quite why it’s taken so long to migrate to the Mito is a question for another dinner, but it’s there at last – and with tweaks.
The same engine is fitted to three or four other models already, the latest being the Fiat Punto. In shifting it across to the Mito Alfa’s engineers have done something, rumoured to involve a larger diameter exhaust and a change to the impellor blade angle within the furious little turbo. It’s worked wonders, reviving a verve that had started to wane.
By modern standards the Mito isn’t a lightweight car. The entry level Peugeot 208, for example, is 975kg, while the Mito TwinAir is a comparatively tubby 1130kg. Expect a round of weight-saving technologies in its next major update, but the way the fettled TwinAir unit handles the weight is light years ahead of other small petrols.
You probably know by now that the TwinAir is force-fed by a small turbo that spins faster than the lead woman in Street Dance, and it gives a kind of zesty performance you just don’t get in normally-aspirated small petrol engines.
Yes there’s a bit of turbo lag; you can’t get away from it. But the shove as the rev needle spins around the counter to a charismatic thrumming soundtrack is delightful. The engine seems smoother in the Mito than it has done in some of its other foster homes, but arguably even more fun.
Should you be strong of willpower there’s actually a choice of how you want to drive it, courtesy of Alfa’s DNA drive selector switch. Going backwards, A is for All-weather, which basically means normal driving settings but allowing for a bit of wheelspin in slippy conditions, along with tighter control over sideways movement.
N is now for Natural. It used to be ‘Normal’, but apparently that was too… normal. It’s now the default anyway, with moderate traction control settings and reduced power output settings that also apply to All-weather. Use this mode gently for maximum efficiency. D, or Dynamic, functions like an overboost, turning the wick up to 11 (and beyond) and releasing the full banzai torque curve.
Well, that’s how it feels, anyway. In reality, the second of the six gears only just about reaches 40mph, so while you’re giggling away to yourself whacking the gear lever into third, you’re not actually going that quickly at all. It’s all part of the joy.
Another of the happy spin-off factors from the TwinAir system is that even with all the extra turbo and vibration control gubbins it’s a good 10% lighter than other small petrol engines, so the Mito’s front end has a wonderful crispness of turn-in, darting into corners as if its life depends on it. It always feels so eager to please, and that makes it incredibly likeable.
You can buy a Mito TwinAir in two trim levels; Sprint and Distinctive. Both post the same tax-free 98g/km CO2 output and 67.3mpg fuel economy, but Distinctive cars are the real lookers. With 17-inch ‘sports’ alloy wheels, red-painted brake callipers, rear parking sensors and a truckload of silver and chrome-effect aesthetic details, it looks as good as the Mito ever has. Very, then.
But even Sprint models get cruise control, Bluetooth, an electronic limited-slip differential, seven airbags, stop-start technology, air conditioning, an alarm and immobiliser, front fog lights and more. It’s far from Spartan, but place the two models side by side and the extra £1,200 for the Distinctive starts to melt into irrelevance.
There are also myriad ways to customise the car, with colour variations on the outside and inside. Alfa limits it to try to avoid any hideous combinations and maintain residual values, but there’s a lot you can do to make it yours.
These days most cars are a bit too anodyne; a bit too sterile. But the Mito TwinAir, thanks to some inspired engine modifications and some styling genius on the higher Distinctive model, is a car with a life – a personality even. I defy anybody to buy one and not end up giving it a name.
It has split personalities, with its economical, easy-going side dominating in Natural drive mode, but in Dynamic it gives you fun by the bucket. The fact that you can have both in one great-looking car makes this little Alfa a real gem.

There is no doubt that the Lexus LFA is a phenomenal piece of kit, but a few eyebrows were raised when its price was unveiled at €368,000 (around £340k).
For any car that's a lot of money, but particularly for the first supercar from a Japanese company that also makes junior executive saloons and the Toyota Prius.
The argument made by some that Ferrari 's spectacular new 458 Italia and the forthcoming McLaren MP4-12C could be bought together for the same money, or thereabouts, seemed to hammer a good few nails in the LFA's coffin before the Japanese supercar was even born.
However, just three months after it was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, the formal expressions of interest - that's those from credible people - have already exceeded the number of cars that will be built. Just 500 will be made in total. Who's laughing now?
However, those wealthy folk who are too busy or have forgotten about the LFA still have until mid-March to register interest, before Lexus essentially chooses who can buy the big-money, carbonfibre-constructed, V10 machine. Lexus will allocate the 500 it's building across 56 countries, and in the meantime has put a car on display at Lexus Park Lane in London.
So, just as a refresher in case you're thinking about it, the LFA has a 4.8-litre V10 producing 552bhp and hits 62mph from a standing start in 3.7 seconds. Lexus says it 'represents the pinnacle of advanced automotive design and engineering.'

In Germany, it is the smell of the skin which really drives people wild (46%) and 48% prefer the other person without perfume. 23% had a liking for underarms, and 32% liked the scent of the genitals.

Finally, if you are a romantic at heart, your perfect partner could be a Hungarian rather than a Latin lover from Argentina for example. 94% of Magyars give women flowers compared with only 36% of South Americans.

If you spend a considerable time in front of a computer either in the workplace or at home, then aching shoulders, neck, wrist and eye strain will all be familiar ailments. Our bodies are not designed for engaging in such repetitive activities as tapping at a keyboard all day or clicking on a mouse, and your eyes certainly aren’t meant to be staring at a glaring monitor for hours on end.

What makes it all the worse is that many of us then go home and do the same again in an often more poorly laid out workspace. So what can you do to ensure your suffering is minimal? Admittedly, if you sit at a desk for long periods of time, you are going to feel some degree of discomfort afterwards.

The following tips on how to make your workstation more healthy should reduce the effects your daily routines are having on your body.

The perfect workstation position

To set up your workstation to allow you to work in the ideal manner, the following basics should be adhered to:

• Legs: the thighs should be parallel to the floor, while the lower legs should vertical and at 90 degrees to the floor.

• Seat height: the adjustable chair should be altered so that the height is level with the back of the knee when the feet are on the floor or a footrest.

• Arms: the upper arms should hang at a vertical 90 degrees to the desk, and the forearms parallel to the floor. The elbows should be close to the body.

• Wrists: wrists should be straight and not anchored on anything.

• Back: the back should be upright or slightly reclined and not twisted in any way.

• Feet: the feet should be at 90 degrees to the lower portion of the legs.

• Sight: the line of sight should be between being straight ahead and 35 degrees below the horizontal.

Your deskspace equipment
Once you are sitting comfortably and in the correct seating position, it is time to consider all the likely equipment around you and where this should be placed for maximum comfort.

• Keyboard: should be located at a height to enable you to keep your upright posture, with your arms relaxed at your side and a 90 degree angle at the elbows and straight wrists. The wrist rests should be used when resting, not when keying.
• Mouse: should be at the same level as the elbow so it can be accessed with a straight wrist. If being used for long periods the elbow or forearm should be supported and fingers should be rested on the mouse buttons rather than hovering above.
• Monitor: generally speaking should be placed directly in front of you. The height should enable you to see the entire screen without any excessive neck movement. The screen should be tilted to minimize glare.
• Work documents: if you are spending long periods typing from documentation then this should be held in front of you (preferably with a document holder) to prevent neck and eye strain.
• Telephone: the phone should be within easy reach and if you require to type and speak at the same time, then a headset is probably the best option.
• Miscellaneous items: other required items should be in easy reach to prevent unnecessary straining.

Remember to move at your desk

It is important to remember that you are not a machine and sitting in a rigid state to follow all the rules listed is not the perfect way to go about it. Your body is designed to move, so make sure you do.

You could try stretching at your desk by leaning back on your seat and stretching your legs and arms out. To release the pressure from your shoulders and neck caused by sitting with your shoulder hunched up around your ears all day, then try a few shoulder raises.

Also take regular breaks to prevent eye strain and a build up of tension. One way to do this is to be set up to a printer in the workplace that requires you to get up and walk to it, to ensure you stretch your legs.
